I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. The radiologist looked at my mammogram and ultrasound, handed me a box of tissues and said “That’s cancer.” Those two words changed everything. After surgery, the doctor confirmed Stage 1 invasive lobular carcinoma. Five weeks of radiation followed surgery, and soon after, I started a 10 year course of Tamoxifen. But I’m not the real warrior in this story. I met Sarah Gilbert 44 years ago, and she has been my best friend and MY warrior ever since. She has been there for me in every part of my life, good or bad. Even when we lived thousands of miles away from each other, she was there—on the phone or, when times were really tough, on a flight to travel half way across the country to make me a homemade meal and help me figure it all out. I’m so proud of the money she has raised to help conquer cancer, and I feel so incredibly grateful to be chosen as her warrior. Melissa Matthews
