John Gilbert

My name is John Gilbert, and I am 81 years old. This September, my wife Terry and I will celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary. We were high school sweethearts in West Virginia, and she's been my steadfast partner every step of the way. We have three wonderful children—Sarah, John, and Julie Ann—along with four grandchildren and a great-grandchild expected this October.

In 2013, Terry and I moved to Simpsonville, South Carolina, to be closer to our children and grandchildren. It was one of the best decisions of our lives, allowing us to be present for the everyday moments that truly matter.

In 2016, during a routine blood test, my PSA level rose significantly above my normal. Follow-up tests and biopsies in 2017 confirmed I had prostate cancer. When I asked my doctor whether it might spread slowly like a turtle or quickly like a rabbit, he said, “It could spread like a rabbit.” That was all I needed to hear—I decided to take action. On October 15, 2018, I underwent a Robotic Radical Prostatectomy, and by the grace of God, my PSA has remained at 0.001% since that day—meaning I am cancer free.

The journey wasn't easy. The surgery left me incontinent, and pelvic muscle therapy offered no improvement. On August 4, 2020, my urologist implanted an Artificial Urinary Sphincter, giving me back control over my daily life. Thanks to advanced surgical care, the unwavering support of my family, and many answered prayers, I am living a full and healthy life today.

But while my own experience with cancer was life-changing, the true inspiration is our daughter Sarah.   For the past several years, my wife and I—along with our son John, his wife Kelly, and Sarah’s friends—have attended the C3 Ride to Maine kick-offs in full support of Sarah. The C3 team’s dedication, organization, and passion are remarkable. Yet nothing fills us with more pride than witnessing Sarah’s strength, perseverance, and quiet determination. She, not I,  is the real warrior in our family.

To be selected as Sarah’s Warrior is one of the most humbling honors of my life. It is a privilege to stand behind her and support this amazing movement to conquer cancer. From the depths of our hearts, my wife and I thank you for letting us be part of this journey.  We are behind Sarah—and all those in C3 who ride for hope, healing, and a future free of cancer.
